Dell Latitude e6430u How to Disassembly Tutorial

Hi and welcome to 365 Laptop Repair. This is a Dell Latitude e6430u How to disassemble tutorial. This teardown consists of disassembly with on screen instructions and a quick reassembly.  The tutorial, or parts of it, will help you prepare your laptop for repairs such as DC jack repair, fan replacement, hard drive replacement and video chip repair. There are a few things you are going to need to complete this repair. In this tutorial we will be using tweezers, a prying tool, and optionally a power Philips screwdriver.

Required Tools:

  • Phillips head screwdriver (or power screwdriver)
  • Tweezers
  • Prying tool

Before Disassembling…

  • Any external network or telephone connections needs to be disconnected from your system
  • The system or any attached peripherals need to be disconnected from power sources

System Component Diagram

Before describing how to disassemble the system components, you need to have a proper know-how about their location on the motherboard.

Removing the Battery

Start by flipping you laptop over to remove the battery.

  • Remove the latch by sliding it towards the unlock position
  • Remove the battery from the system

Bottom Door Removal

Now you need to remove the bottom door, after which you can access more components. Here is what you need to do to remove it.

  • There are two screws at the two ends of the laptop (shown in red) you need to remove.
  • Remove the door by sliding it outwards

Memory Removal

Remove the memory module in green below. Flip the clips out and then slide the memory module out.

Disconnecting cables

  • Lift the plastic covering the keyboard flex cables
  • Using tweezers, unclip and disconnect the three connectors

  • Disconnect the smart card ribbon cable

Taking out the WWAN Card and disconnecting the LCD cable

After you are done with removing those components, it is time to remove the Wireless Wide Area Network Card (WWAN Card). The WWAN card is located at the corner of the motherboard (orange box) The LCD cable is in the red box.

  • Disconnect the black and white wires from the Wi-Fi card.
  • Pull up on the LCD connector to disconnect it

  • Remove the screw holding the Wi-Fi card to the board. It is the bottom most arrow in the picture below.
  • Take the card out of the system.

Removing the SSD (Solid state hard drive)

  • The SSD is at the top most arrow in the picture below. It is held by one screw holding it to the motherboard. Remove the screw and then slide the SSD out.

Removing the Fan

Fans are used to keep the laptop cool and remove any dirt from the motherboard. The fan is situated in the bottom-middle of the motherboard. The fan is made functional by a cable to the motherboard. To remove the fan, you need to follow these steps:

  • Disconnect the cable which connects the fan to the motherboard
  • You’ll see two screws holding the fan to the board. Remove these screws
  • Remove the fan.

Removing the motherboard cover

  • The picture below highlights all the screws that will allow you to access the motherboard.
  • In case you only need to remove the keyboard, unscrew the ones marked with red arrows only.

Turn the laptop over. Use prying tool to separate the keyboard from the case.

Once the keyboard is loose disconnect the ribbon cable that connects it to the motherboard.

Disconnecting cables and removing screws under the keyboard

Next, unclip and disconnect the trackpad ribbon cable, the speaker wire in red to the top right, and the ribbon cables in red at the center, as indicated below

  • Remove the 3 palm rest screws in orange.
  • Use a prying tool to separate the palm rest from the case as seen in the second picture below

Removing the TAA Board, and disconnecting cables

The TAA Board only comes with DELL Latitude E6430u systems sold inside the U.S. The TAA board is held by a screw to the motherboard.

  • Then remove the TAA board, disconnect the 2 ribbon cables marked to the left
  • Then the CMOS battery connector and the network cable to the right.
  • Remove the LCD hinge screws in green.

Removing the DC jack, wifi switch and motherboard screws

  • Remove the jack screws located at the arrows on the left side.
  • Remove the WiFi switch screw (marked as green). Disconnect and remove it.
  • Unscrew the four-motherboard screws marked in red.

Turn over the board. Unscrew the heat sink screws marked below and remove the heat sink.

With the motherboard removed and heat sink detached the teardown is complete. Replace any parts you need to. Next we will put it back together.

How to Reassemble the Laptop

Re-installing the Motherboard

  • Re-position the heat sink back on the motherboard and tighten the four screws.

  • Re-position the motherboard back in the case
  • Replace, reconnect, and securely screw the Wi-Fi switch to its socket to the left (marked in green).
  • Replace the DC jack and its two screws in the top left corner.
  • Secure the motherboard with the four screws.

Replace the LCD screen and reconnect the board:

  • Carefully position the LCD hinges, making sure that the two wire jacks (LCD jack on your right and the speaker wires on your left hand side) have fully extended towards the other side.
  • Secure the LCD by tightening the two hinge screws (marked as green)
  • Re-connect the ribbon cables (blue) and the CMOS battery and the network cable (Orange)

Securely replace the palm rest:

  • Reconnect and clip the track ribbon (Yellow), the speakers (Green), and the ribbon cables for lights and buttons (Orange).
  • Tighten the three screws for the palm rest (turquoise)

Slide the keyboard back into place.

Turn over the case and replace the smart card:

Reconnect the cables in red, the ribbon cable in orange and the LCD cable in green.

  • Securely replace the Wi-Fi card, and tighten the screw (top orange box).
  • Replace, connect, and screw-in-place the fan (red)
  • Put the memory back in all the way at an angle and then flip it down flat so the clips hold it in once again.

  • Reconnect the Wi-Fi wires, make sure to connect the wires (black and white) to their original position

Replace the bottom case cover and screw all the screws in place (marked as Blue and Red)

Replace the back cover and replace the two screws near the edges.

Slide in the bottom cover to complete the re-assembly!
